South Island
Think of Southern Vancouver Island as the best backyard you’ll ever have. In Greater Victoria, go for a swim in Thetis Lake, watch the cruise ships from Dallas road, take a whale watching trip or hike up Mt. Doug. It’s hard to leave the city, but a visit to the outlying areas should be next on your to-do list.
On the southern coast, you’ll find amazing surfing spots for both beginners and experts. Feeling adventurous? Book a spot on the famous West Coast Trail, a 77 km trek from Bamfield to Port Renfrew. If you want an easier hike, trying climbing Mt. Finlayson in Goldstream Provincial Park. When you’re done, you can cool off in Niagara Falls. It’s not nearly as big as its Ontario cousin but it’s still refreshing!
Central Island
Only a few hours from Victoria, the central island has everything from world class surfing and snowboarding to hiking and fishing. It also houses Canada’s biggest and best: the highest waterfall (Della Falls), the tallest tree (the Carmanah Giant), and Canada’s first professional surfing championship (Tofiino). North America’s best windsurfing location (Nitinat Lake) is also found in this region.
North Island
With a population of 15,000, the rugged north island is a world of its own. With its expansive forests and rugged coastlines, it’s a haven for anglers, boaters, campers, divers, kayakers, hikers and beachgoers.
It takes around 8 hours to drive from Victoria to the northern tip of the island. While you’re there, be sure to check out Cape Scott provincial park, which is famous for its old-growth forest and sandy beaches. Its longest beach, Nels Bight, stretches more than 2,400 meters!
